Escape To Miami Triathalon

Saturday Seoptember 26th, join the fun with the Publix Escape to Miami Triathlon Weekend 2010,. here are the details:


Start Times
Sunday, September 26, 2010
6th Annual Publix Escape to Miami Triathlon Weekend - first wave start 7:00 AM


Race Categories: Elite (Male, Female), Age Group (Male, Female), Relay (Male, Female, Coed), Clydesdale and Athena.

Relay Teams: Relay teams will be made up of 2 or 3 participants competing in each event (swim, bike, and run). All members of the relay team must be USAT members and must check-in at Packet Pick-Up. The team will not be able to pick-up packet until each member has signed in.

Packet Pick-Up/Transition Area/Finish Line will all be located in Margaret Pace Park in Downtown Miami, 1745 N. Bayshore Drive, Miami, FL 33132 or at the intersection of North Bayshore Drive and NE 18th Terr.

Cut-off times Olympic Distance (*all times are subject to change):
Out of the Transition to head out for the bike by 9:00 AM (or 1 hour and 10 minutes from last wave start time)
Out of Bike Transition to head out for the run by 11:00 AM (or 3 hours and 10 minutes from last wave start time)
At the finish line by 12:20 PM (or 4 hours and 30 minutes from last wave start time)

Cut-off times Sprint Distance (*all times are subject to change):
Out of Swim Transition to head out for the bike by 9:25 AM (or 40 minutes from sprint start time)
Out of Bike Transition to head out for the run by 11:00 AM
(or 2 hrs. and 15 min. from sprint start time)
At the finish line by 12:20 PM
(or 3 hrs. and 35 min. from sprint start time)


Finishers of the Publix Escape to Miami Triathlon before the 12:20 PM (or 4 hours and 30 minutes) cut-off will receive a finisher’s medal.

Chip Timing
• The Publix Escape to Miami Triathlon Weekend uses the ChampionChip timing system.
• Participants MUST wear their ChampionChip. NO chip, NO time.
• Failure to return your ChampionChip immediately following the race will result in a $30 charge for a lost, stolen, or broken chip.
• The event will provide five split times: swim time, transition #1, bike time, transition #2, run time.

Packet Pick-up

Packet pick-up will also be held at the race site, Margaret Pace Park (1745 N. Bayshore Dr, Miami, FL 33132). (*times and locations are subject to change)

Please remember...

•You must bring and show your picture ID
•Each athlete must pick up their own packet, you can not pick up for another athlete
•Relay teams must have each team member sign in before getting packet
•You must have a valid USA Triathlon Membership card or purchase a $10 One Day Membership for the Publix Escape to Miami Weekend



IMPORTANT NOTE: A strict schedule will be followed in ferrying athletes to "Escape Island", and all participants must plan accordingly. The ferry schedule will be available during Packet Pick-Up. The schedule will require all participants to arrive at the park on race day AT LEAST 2 HOURS PRIOR TO RACE START. Participants must have body markings and all equipment must be set-up in transition area prior to boarding ferries. We ask that all participants pick-up their packets on Saturday to avoid delays and/or missing the ferry on race morning.
In order to ferry all athletes to Escape Island on Sunday morning, race day packet pick-up will close promptly at 6:30 AM. Anyone who arrives past 6:30 AM will not be able to board the ferries. Please make sure you arrive no later than 5:30 AM to check in, set-up equipment and board a ferry.

NO PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO CHECK IN PAST 6:30 AM ON RACE DAY. IF YOU ARRIVE PAST 6:30 AM, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BOARD A FERRY.

PRE-RACE BRIEFINGS: Staff from US Road Sports will offer race briefings on Saturday during Packet Pick-Up at Margaret Pace Park at 1:30 PM, 2:30 PM, 3:30 PM, 4:30 PM, 5:30 PM, 6:30 PM, and 7:30 PM. Briefings will explain the course and give you a chance for last second questions about the race.

Parking
Parking is available one block south of the park at the Omni Garage / Hilton Hotel (1601 Biscayne Blvd. Miami, FL 33132). Discounted, flat rate parking available with participant number or wristband. Access to the garage will be available from Biscayne Blvd., N. Bayshore Dr., or NE 17th Terr. (Publix Escape to Miami does not manage nor profit from this garage). Additional parking will be available within walking distance of the park at the Marriott Hotel (1633 N. Bayshore Dr.) or at the Venetia Condo (555 NE 15th St., valet only). Standard parking rates apply. Meters are also available. Please park in marked lots and spaces only. Parking at bagged meters is prohibited and violators will be towed.

Triathlon morning details
Emails will be sent to you with additional details and instructions (staging, transition area, markings, ferry, and so forth) for race morning and items will be posted on the website.

•Publix Escape to Miami Triathlon will begin promptly at 7:00 AM*.
•Ferries begin boarding at 5:45 AM and you must board your assigned ferry.
•Transition opens at 5:00 AM. Athletes only are allowed to enter and must have wristbands, timing chips, bodymarking and bikes numbered.
•Ensure that your bike is racked according to your number and that personal belongings are limited to the space allotted for your bike.


Swim Details/Warnings/Currents




The Publix Escape to Miami Triathlon Weekend water safety team is lead by Lifeguard Services.



Swim distance -- .9 miles for Olympic Distance race presented by Cytomax & Muscle Milk (Wetsuits are not allowed) This is an open water swim that takes place in Biscayne Bay, which is normally calm. This event is for experienced and well trained swimmers. The depth of the water ranges from 4 feet to 30+ feet. Currents will be announced on race weekend. The water in Biscayne Bay is quite clear and visibility on calm days is good. Wetsuits will not be allowed (as per USAT guidelines). Water temperature averages for Biscayne Bay are in the high 70’s to low 80’s.




Age Groups/Divisions/Awards
All finishers of the Escape will receive a finisher medal. Awards will also be given to the top 3 in each division below. Awards ceremony will be held at Margaret Pace Park after the race.

•Elite
•Age groups every 5 years starting with 14 & under to 85+ (M & F)
•Clydesdale and Athena Awards: Two Male/Female age groups; Ages 39 & Under and Masters (40 +) in the following weight classes:
◦200 – 224 lbs (Male Clydesdale) 39 and under
◦200 – 224 lbs ( Male Clydesdale) 40+ (Master)
◦150 lbs+ (Female Athena) 39 and under
◦150 lbs+ (Female Athena) 40+ (Master)
•Relay (Male, Female & Coed)

Race Rules and Policies

Race management reserves the right to postpone or cancel the event due to events out of management’s control such as a natural disaster or other emergencies. No refunds will be issued under these circumstances. Management may also alter the course and distances for the safety of athletes.


All established USA Triathlon rules will be in effect including but not limited to the following:

•Hard shell helmets required.
•Swim caps provided and required.
•Drafting is strictly prohibited.
•Do not mount bikes in the transition area.
•You must show a valid and current USAT Membership Card or purchase a One Day Membership.

The following USAT Guidelines will be strictly enforced during Packet Pick-Up:

•All participants will be required to bring picture ID to pick up packet and all packets need to be picked up in person.
•All USAT members will be required to show their current USAT membership card to pick up their packet. If you forget your card you will need to pay the daily membership fee before picking up your packet. If you lost your card, you may print it from USAT’s website.
•You will not be able to purchase yearly USAT Membership at packet pick-up.
•All USAT non-members must include the $10 one day fee with their registration or purchase their One Day Membership at the race. If interested in becoming a USAT member please visit them at www.usatriathlon.org or call 719.597.9090

No Handcycle Division

Due to safety issues on the course, and in accordance with International Paralympic Committee rules, no handcycles (handbikes, handcrank devices or other mechanically gear driven devices) will be permitted in the race.

Racing Wheelchair Division Rules


•Racing wheelchairs shall be defined as a customized performance chair.
•IPC Athletics Rules will be enforced. For additional rules view: www.ipcathletics.org

•Further the race will abide by the rules and policies of the recognized governing bodies of the sports of wheelchair racing, which do not allow the use of mechanical gears found on handbikes. For additional information contact: Wheelchair Sports USA www.wsusa.org


Everyday Wheelchairs


1.Everyday wheelchairs shall be defined as a stock manual wheelchair
2.The wheelchair shall have at least four functional wheels
3.The overall length of the chair from outside of front casters/wheels to outside of rear wheel shall not exceed 100 cm
4.The rear wheels shall not exceed 70 cm in diameter
5.The front caster/wheels shall not exceed 8 inches/17.6 cm in diameter.
6.The rear seat height must be greater than 30 cm (13.6 inches). Persons of small stature may be exempt
7.Only one plain round hand rim is allowed for each rear wheel. This rule may be waived for persons requiring a single arm drive chair.
8.No mechanical gears or levers shall be allowed.
9.The chair must be manually propelled.
10.All chairs are subject to a rules and safety inspections
11.Runners and walkers in all races will have the right of way. Wheelchair racers shall yield to runners or walkers.
12.It will be the athlete's responsibility to meet the above rules.
